spider web runner
the other day my sister was complaining that she couldn't find most of her halloween decor. which is sad, because in days past she was a hard-core crafter. she had homemade goodies dotting her whole house.not anymore. which is why i decided to help out her cause.
i made this for her (shh...don't tell, it's a secret that she will get tomorrow...court, if you're reading this. say nothing, act casual...).

honestly, i had been planning on making her something anyway and her plight gave me more than a good excuse.

behold...
a dollar store table runner. i'm so thoughtful, right? but actually, i think it looks really cute. i bought a couple of this spiderweb place mats from the dollar store.

here's a pic of one:
*ignore the glitter. it's practically in every crevice of every piece of furniture i own.

initially i tried using Martha's onyx glitter paint. big mistake. after 3 coats i realized it wasn't working. (sorry, martha, i love your other stuff, promise!) so i opted for the traditional elmer's glue and jar of glitter. one coat and done.
i then sewed them together on the diagonals to create this effect.
here's a closeup of the awesome (and cheap) glitter.

overall, it's a super easy craft that barely cost me anything (including the wasted martha paint. *le grand sigh). that is, if my sister isn't reading this. and if she is, holy cow, this one really set me back. i'm the best and favorite sister, i'm sure.

things i've learned:
1. aside from the fact that i'm a cool sister? glitter paint/spray paint might save a little time up front but in the long run, it's a big hot mess. i've never had any luck with it. what about you guys?
2. stiffened felt isn't the easiest to sew. i mean, i *might have assumed that. but, in case you haven't done it. it is. you're welcome.

You made me laugh. Thanks! You did a great job on this good looking runner and you saved money, too. I always go with glue and glitter cuz it's cheap and it always works. Your sister will love this, I'm sure.

That is so cool, I love it! If the glitter flakes off, I've put mod podge over that kind of glitter and it works really well. I'm so looking for those placemats!

Great idea. Simple and chic, but you should make one for yourself. I've seen those placemats on a few blogs, but alas not at my dollar store.

That is awesome! I'm new to the dollar store and don't know how I survived so long without it! I typically only decorate the exterior, but next year I'm definitely taking it inside as well.... Thanks for the creative idea!
