it's funny.
it's the most wonderful time of the year-my house is just itching to be decorated for the chirstmas season.
and yet.
i'm in a funk.
i mean, don't get me wrong. life is still busy.
thursday, we had the breaking dawn party (ps. my sister's treats were over the top awesome...i'm so so lucky but i forgot to take pics of it all).
friday, my other sister and i made a quinceanera cake...(this was by no means a small cake-3 tiers, 3 different flavors, homemade fondant(my sister rocks), decoration, the works)-ps...i didn't get a pic of that either, what in the freak is my problem?
saturday.major breakthrough in my quest for a dresser for our bedroom. found not one, but two. phew. pics to follow when they get delivered.
sunday. church. busy-ness. the like.
from all accounts, i shouldn't be in a funk. but i am.and i want to get out, for pete's sake. it's thanksgiving break. so in attempt to shake me out of my funk, i'm reminding myself of some of my favorite fall befores and afters...
project one: clearance owl decor...
i found this little owl dish-type thing at TJ Maxx...it was on clearance for $6. as i put it in the cart, my mom's disgusted look did not deter me. i had plans (or at least a few prayers that i could make it look better than this brown glazed weirdness)
when i was creating my thanksgiving tree, i told you i was totally into metallics. i wasn't joking. i bought a can or silver and a can of gold (both valspar, both aahhhmazing). i've used up both cans. i *might have a problem. and by *problem, i mean addiction. and by *might, i mean do.
so a few quick coats of the silver spraypaint and behold...an owl dish
that looks super schwanky. super cool. i love them now...honestly,
people pick it up expecting it to be this heavy metal sculpture and are
always surprised to feel that it is ceramic...woohoo! mission accomplished!
project two: dollar store leaf dish
i bought this little guy from the dollar store. i had hoped to try doing
some mercury glass (which, ps, i have perfect that technique
now...details to come) on it-but it is plastic. and the looking glass
paint wasn't working (not to mention, i followed martha's technique-big
mistake!)
so after the 4th coat of looking glass (doing the spray water
technique), i gave up and just let my gold spray paint take over. i'm
glad i did. i mean, i wouldn't see this in the store and have to
have it...but for a dollar, i'll take it. not to mention, lady m loves
to carry around her little puppy dog in it. so. a dollar well spent.
project three: turkeylove
i found this guy at a yardsale. he's my second turkey purchase of the
year. i never thought i'd be buying turkeys. i always thought they were a
little...well, not me. but for a buck, i bought him and knew that this
milky-glaze had to go. cue silver spray paint...
it's hard to tell, what with the lighting but he's a super cool silver turkey-and the light bounces off of him in a super cool way.
and that's that. to be honest, those are only a few of the spray paint projects of the season. i've got spraypaint fever...if i can take a second and get cheesy, i'm seriously grateful for spraypaint. it helps me change the look and feel of an object within a few minutes, and for only a few bucks. thanks, spraypaint. *tear...cue pavarotti singing in the background.
things i've learned:
1. some things don't spray paint well. i have a felt owl on my porch right now, soaking and soaking up all of this spray paint. i guess he just didn't want to go from purple to ivory...dude, i get it.
2. i'm really starting to worry about the winter. can you spray paint in the cold? please help me figure out some solutions...we don't have a garage.

COOL!!!! I'm totally heading to the store to get some spray paint. And I'll have to see if there are some more yard sales to buy some not-so-pretty nick-nacs and turn them into treasures. The owls now look like straight from an expensive designer store. Such a simple thing to do - thanks for the great idea Lesley!
I love how the spray paint gave everything new life! I love the owls even more, I have an owl obsession! I would love for you to share this over at Totally Inspired Tuesdays at The Inspired Collection.

I spray painted 3 ceramic Christmas trees and I would never want them changed back to green. (http://charlieandjo.wordpress.com/2011/11/22/heirloom-ceramic-christmas-tree-desecration/ )Love, love, love metallic spray paint. Your little owls on a branch are stellar like they might get into the next Muppet movie or something as a singing trio. Jo @ Let's Face the Music

I like the metallic better, too! Thanks so much for linking up to Things I’ve Done Thursday!!

lovin' it!
Beautifully and cleverly done! I'll be getting me some metallic spray paint today. By the way, LOVE the Shakespeare in your header and also the way you write...not just well but snappy, too. You,sweety, are a smart woman! I'll be following/stalking you now.
My mom has spraypainted just about anything you can imagine, and it always turns out great. Today I took a cue from her (and you!) and spraypainted the bare branches of a little outdoor tree, which tonight my young niece will adorn with lights and ornaments.
Just found your site via Between You & Me, Love it! I'm adding you to my crafty links.

Nice makeovers! I love the metallics. I have a can of bronze metallic and I haven't even figured out what to use it on now! I might need to go shopping for some little dishes or something. Great inspiration!
Love silver....Love owls!...I'm a new follower too.
great makeovers! I love me some great spray painted thrifts!
